Copperas Cove Information
Copperas Cove is located in central Texas at the southern corner of Coryell County, with city limits extending into neighboring Bell and Lampasas counties. Founded in 1879 as a small ranching and farming community, today the city is the largest in Coryell County, with 33,374 residents. The name Copperas Cove, once spelled Coperas Cove, was inspired by water from a nearby spring that had a mineral taste.
Two major events occurred in Copperas Cove's history that gave a boost to the local economy and the population and improved Copperas Cove's fortunes. These were the expansion of the railroad into the area in the late 1880s and the construction of Camp Hood (Fort Hood) in 1942. It was also a feeder route of the Chisholm Trail. Copperas Cove continued to grow but like all cities declined with the onset of the Great Depression in the early 1930s. That changed, when the United States government chose southeastern Coryell and northwestern Bell counties as the site for Camp Hood, a new military training center.
Copperas Cove is surrounded by the hill country of Central Texas where wild turkey, deer, armadillos and roadrunners are a common sight. The wildlife, large oaks and mesquite sage and cacti form a picturesque scene of country living. It has great neighborhoods that provide options in sizes, prices and architectural designs of homes. Its location gives you easy access to Austin, Temple, Fredericksburg or some beautiful backroads to enjoy the byways of the Texas Hill Country. Take a look at the property listed below.
